What it is

  • Another "must have" in off-road, long distance competition or trail rides.

The oversized IMS tank for the Yamaha YZ250/YZ250X with the Dry Break system has become a "must have" in all long distance racing. Is is a polyurethane crosslink material for a claimed increases strength. The tank comes in both a conventional screw cap or the adapter for a dry break system. Multiple colors are available for the screw cap including Natural, Blue, White or Black but only in Natural for the dry break system. Over a gallon is added to the stock 2.1 gallon tank. It gives the rider the ability to comfortably cover large distances or extended time between pits or events that may have pits as far as 50 miles apart.

"Much more important then the shortened pit time is the 1.1 gallons added to the stock 2.1 gallon tank."

How it works

  • Mounts up easily using all your stock hardware.

The mounting the IMS over-sized tank set up is relatively easily utilizing all the stock hardware and mounts. Un-bolt the frame mounts, seat mounts and petcock and mount on the tank. If you have a screw cap version you're pretty much done at this point. With the Dry Break system there are a few more steps. You must drill the hole for the vent hose to accompany the dry break receiver and then slide the receiver in and bolt it on... that's it. Instructions are basic but adequate for such a simple task.

The tank also comes with extra bolts to attach your plastics the tank-- some stock tanks utilize plastic bolts while the IMS tank has metal inserts in the tank. The plastics and seat will take a little finesse to get to bolt up as the tank is a bit bigger than the stock set up. The plastics will stretch over time and become more relaxed over time. The seat will bunch up a little but it settled over time.

One of the things to keep an eye out for is the o-rings on the pet-cock, dry break and vent hose sealing correctly. It is easy to roll the o-ring or cut them on accident so be very careful.  The vent hose O-ring is an easy one to get but the ones on the dry break and petcock are special ones available from a shop or online. Make sure to check that it is sealed before going out on a ride to ensure you will hold all your fuel.

Once all mounted up the tank does what it is supposed to do. It holds 3.2 gallons, gets you from point A to point B and as long as you keep an eye on your seals and don't have any big crashes it will hold fuel for as long as you own it! The tank itself is noticeably wider and taller then the stock tank but a few hours of riding it will aide getting used to the new shape. It was not uncomfortable for any of our riders. But most said they could feel the extra weight of a full tank of fuel. That was about 8-9 extra pounds total.

Changing the inevitable pit stop from a 30 seconds to 1 minute or longer down to a to a 4-8 second stop was really the big deal with the $225 dry break receiver and a $380 dump can. Yes expensive.  But we also added a $45 screw cap adapter when our racer needed his dry break system back and it worked just fine for all recreational use. Much more important then the shortened pit time is the confidence to go the extra distance, whether racing or on the trail. And for that the IMS tank is a wise and worthy option.
