2017 Husky TX300–Scott Hoffman

Wow pretty much says it all. I am not lying; I rode the Husky 300 at my secret mini spot near my house before my first real ride and in less than 5 minutes I realized this bike has something special about it. The engine is what does it first for me; it chugs down to almost stalling and just motors its way through almost anything. Even on slight grades I was able to almost stall the bike out and even in third gear it would power out. It is almost as if they found that perfect combo between the torque of a four-stroke combined with the feel of a two-stroke and the control and accuracy of a trials bike. It is hard to believe this is considered a close-course off-road race bike and not a full enduro.

The chassis is superlight and you can feel the influence from the Hard Enduro world where you need a full-sized motorcycle but you have to ride it like a trials bike at times. The combination is amazing, I just wish it was street legal — an old man can wish can’t he? The effortless feel is amazing and confidence inspiring to take on more technical trial with less stress. I just needed I more time to try a variety of tires on the Husky. The AT81s are durable and work well for typical off-road but I would bet that traction would be even better with a more sticky tire out back or even a trials or hybrid trials tire.

They call this a cross-over bike that is capable to take on a full moto track but for my size it was a little soft and hitting larger jumps can open your eyes because it went through the stroke a tad too much and bottomed if I did not hit my landing on tarket. For a grand prix track it might work but big G-outs and larger hits I would want to further firm up the suspension. Air helps as well as clickers but it takes away some of the traits I like about the bike at slower speeds. For me I need a little stiffer valving to hold the bike up through larger hits. For standard off-road and trial it worked very well and the updated fork is much improved over older style 4CS paper weight.

With only a ride and a half on the bike I can still put the 300 up on my list as one of my favorite off-road bikes. Although it is kind of considered a converted moto bike for close course racing, with the addition of an FMF spark arrestor, the TX300 feels to me like the perfect tight trail machine. I want one for my very own, I need a raise and better start saving my spare change.
