Jimmy Rigged–In Motion

Jimmy Lewis Erzburg

I like motion. Moving. Going places. I was never aware of this until recently while making my way too common drive between Nevada and California. As much as I hate spending four hours driving a vehicle I somehow find it relaxing. That isn’t to say one of the things I hate most is traffic and not having the ability to flow at the rate of speed I decide. Or at least the speed the law of the road dictates, for the most part. And if not driving a vehicle, being in motion puts me to sleep.

This peace in motion, whether learned at a young age when traveling with parents or maybe it is something built in from my ancestors who were pirates, loved flying and taking road trips, has really translated into my love for riding. Especially in the dirt where there are few speed limits, plenty of options and loads of places to explore.

The dirt bike in particular has the ability to sooth my need for speed with acceleration forces that can, depending on the bike, put my stomach up in my throat. My motorcycle can flow better than a snowboard or a surfboard (at least for me) with the added benefit of a throttle to amplify the effect. The dimensions which my bike can move, side-to-side and up and down are unparalleled for the simplicity of the vehicle. My dirt bike can fly. Find the right jump with the right landing and I don’t think I could buy that feeling.

There are people who seem to have everything, and often they are asked what makes them happy. “Going for a drive,”  and “hitting the road” seem to come up often. Some people take their babies out for a drive when they are wound up and crying. And I see “Sunday Drivers” every day of the week.  Not sure if it is the vibrations of the vehicle? Maybe sound plays into it? The visual aspects of being in motion have an effect that is hard to explain but euphoric to some. Remember we as humans have not been able to move much faster than we could run in a historic sense, so it is still somewhat confusing for our ever evolving brains if you buy into instinctive predisposition.

Especially when riding in the dirt at speed, something that puts my brain and all of the power it has to think in a “right now, right here” time frame. It is a sort of reboot. It clears out the stuff I don’t need to think about and opens up space for the important things to come to the front. That is why I feel I do my best thinking while I’m moving. Gotta go, my brain needs a refresh!
