What it is

  • A mechanical device to easily change rear shock spring preload.

The Xtrig preload adjuster replaces the stock double ring or single ring and pinch clamp with a mechanical setup that allows fast and easy adjustment of shock spring preload. It is a built using a billet casing housing a worm gear drive to rotate a sleeve that will either climb up or down the shock body increasing or decreasing the spring preload pressure. This allows, in most cases more spring adjustment range and a simplified process once the Xtrig is installed. The ratio is claimed to be approximately 1:20 so it takes 20 rotations of the 8mm adjustment bolt to equal one turn of spring preload.

How it works

  • Easy and quick track or trailside.
  • Even easier with a battery powered driver.
  • A little pricey but it is a very trick part.

The biggest issue you will find on the KTM WP suspension is that the shock must be disassembled for the preload adjuster to be installed. On most other shocks, this is not the case. We just had it installed when we were doing a routine service, so no big deal. Once on the unit is simple to use and makes a task that is sometimes overlooked because it is a pain, much easier to accomplish. There is no excuse for not setting and adjusting the sag. Say good bye to the hammer and the punch or even having to put the bike on the stand!

Just find an 8mm socket or an 8mm T-handle and spin away. The ratio on ours was one compete turn of spring preload for 24-rotations of the adjuster. Even better, have a small battery powered driver like the Makita 12-Volt MAX Lithium-Ion 1/4 in. Cordless Driver and it takes seconds. It is easy to make small changes that can really tune the handling of the bike, especially if you are a picky rider and pay attention of the balance of the machine. The adjuster is also great for some other scenarios. Multiple riders of different weights riding the same bike. Carrying luggage in soft packs. Or most important, testing and tuning your bike to get a proper setup or adjust to changing conditions of the track. Even just riding with this tool and trying different ride heights in a single session without stopping for long to change the sag is valuable in learning how important the ride height setting is and how a rider prefers for his or her bike to work.

We did not experience any issues with mud or dust getting into the threads and there are even slits in the adjuster to squirt in lube if needed. It never moved unless we adjusted it. And over time there were no signs of anything abnormal.

If you don't know what sag is then this product isn't for you. But even if you are a little aware of the importance then the $180 price should not scare you off if you like to have the best equipment on your bike. It was so simple to adjust just a half turn of spring preload and quickly, where maybe taking the time to do it the old fashion way might have been too much hassle. It is expensive but our experience is that this little gem makes getting an ideal setup so much easier. And once you use it you'll hate doing it the old way!
