The Works Chassis Lab engine mounts for the 2023+ Yamaha YZ450F and 2024+ YZ450FX/WR450F are an aftermarket modification designed to fine-tune the stiffness and flex characteristics of the chassis. Since the 2023 YZ450F chassis is known to have a firm-feeling front end that can sometimes transmit harsh feedback, these mounts— offered in varying degrees of rigidity (soft or medium in this case)—aim to alter the frame's flex in a way that can improve comfort, increase front-end bite, or enhance stability. By replacing the stock engine hangers, riders can effectively tune the feel of the bike to better suit specific track conditions, rider preference, or to complement suspension settings
The top hangers are constructed of titanium and bolt directly to the YZF frame using the stock hardware. They are available in Soft (which is what we tested here) or Medium stiffnesses and have a MSRP of $219.99. Front mounts are also available in Soft, Medium, or Stiff stiffnesses with an MSRP of $169.99.
How it works
- Adds comfort to the new chassis.
- Works well with multiple suspension setups.
- Better feel on decel and acceleration.
Yamaha revamped their 450cc bikes and while there are a lot of positives that come with the changes made, a loss of comfort in the chassis is a drawback amongst all of our testers. We didn’t feel the need for aftermarket mounts on the older gen Yamaha, but the newest frame is substantially different. We’ve been able to tune the chassis and bring a lot of that comfort and stability back with some key parts and at the top of that is Works Chassis Labs’ “Soft” Top Engine Hanger.
These were tested on a 2024-2025 YZ450FX but will translate to the 2023+ YZ450F with both stock and modified suspension and the sensations were shared across multiple suspension setups - something that isn’t always the case with engine mounts.
Installation is simple but using a torque wrench is critical to getting the most out of these and to keep it consistent when they are installed. We used the following torque specs on the bolts: 25 ft lbs. (M8) & 33 ft lbs. (M10).
We felt the need for improvement most on deceleration where the chassis feels slightly harsh and pitchy as a result of the rear end struggling to settle in breaking bumps and chop. Additionally, there is some harshness and deflection under acceleration, but it isn’t as critical as we felt on decel with this bike.
Once mounted, the bike feels drastically different and unanimously better with all of our testers. Much to our surprise, we really don’t have any performance drawbacks with these hangers compared to stock. On decel, the bike remains much calmer and flatter, staying planted to the ground and giving the rider more confidence and control. Under acceleration, the bike tracks straighter and soaks up chop more comfortably with a softer touch to it.
We’ve tested hangers that are “too soft” and we lose rear end connection – almost to the point that it feels like we have a flat tire – but these maintain a positive rear end feel under acceleration both on lean angle and vertical. Straight line stability and cornering were all improved with added comfort and a more planted bike under lean angle and when vertical.
Overall, the top mounts just made the bike easier to ride as it calmed the chassis and provided a more forgiving ride without sacrificing the added precision and nimbleness that the new chassis offers. Stability is dramatically improved without much of a loss in cornering prowess - a tough thing to achieve both. However, it really helped the chassis and overall motorcycle and is one of the best mods we can recommend for the new generation Yamaha 450.
