How it works
- Orange stitching on seat cover is a stylish touch
I ordered a complete seat kit for a KTM 990 Adventure Baja. My test bike was purchased used and the previous owner had managed to smash the mounting tabs of the original seat. So I solved two problems with one order. I got a new seat base and a slightly shorter seat. I have measured this seat as carefully as I could and it appears the seat is about a 1/2 inch (13mm) lower than the standard KTM Seat. However the real magic is in the shape of the seat, by reshaping the seat foam, the people at Seat Concepts get a seating surface that provides a wider seating area for your butt, which is more comfortable as the miles roll by. In addition to this they narrow and round the forward part of the seating area which allows your legs a more direct path to the ground providing better footing.
The seat cover and foam seems to be first rate stuff and has proven to be up to task of adventure riding. The seat base is not quite up to O.E. standards because it fits loose at the front and rear mount points it gives you the feeling that the seat is not installed correctly but it is. This condition was not severe enough that I felt the need to take any action. The seat never came off in over a 900 mile ride. However no structural problems have occurred with the seat base in hundreds of miles with heavier riders aboard.
When riding with this seat the added comfort is noticeable compared to the stock seat. The added confidence of the improved footing for the inseam challenged when stopping makes for more confidence when riding in technical terrain where you may need to put a foot down. When talking about adventure motorcycles you have to consider riding while standing since this is the best way to get the bikes to maneuver off-road. No problems were noted when standing with any obstruction to my legs.
This seat is a great option if you need a new seat for any reason. For roughly $20 more over the standard seat you get a higher or lower option and the improved rounded seat design. Since I needed a complete seat and got a new custom lower seat with improved comfort, I give Seat Concepts high marks with just a small small demerit for fit.
