- Makes a tough job simple.
- Almost like magic.
- Durable and compact.
- So easy to use you wish you had more valve jobs.
What it is
- A valve spring compressor and keeper placer all-in-one.
Motion Pro manufactures this unique valve spring compressor and valve keeper setting device that does the work of a much larger valve spring compressor. When you compress the valve spring or springs it sets the keepers in place automatically through a spring activated center pin. The tool is heavy duty and has a gripping sleeve over the end of it. It is available in two sizes for different sized valve spring retainers. The larger tool is designed for valves with a 5.5mm valve stem diameter or larger with under 40 lbs. seat pressure and the smaller for 5mm stems or less.
How it works
- Simple to use.
- Durable.
- A value after its first use.
This is one of the easiest tools to use and it makes a delicate and complex task of setting the keepers along the valve stem very simple. You basically assemble the valve into the cylinder head and set the spring and retainer in place. Then you set the keepers in position in the retainer above where they will be seated. With the tool you simply center it and press downward. I like having the head sitting on a balled-up shop rag to keep the valve in the seat. The tool will compress the spring and retainer while allowing the keepers to slide up into the tool along the valve stem and set into place. There is usually a small click sound and feeling, especially on heavier valve springs and when you release the pressure the keepers are in place and the valve assembled in the head. A tap with a rubber mallet on the valve stem will settle and set the keepers for good measure.
On most modern four-stoke race motors there is just a single spring with minimal pressure and a very small valve so the small tool is typically the right one for the job. On most heads I’ve done the tool requires minimal pressure and it is a one-hand press to set the keepers taking all of five seconds. Some valves, like on the older KTM RFS heads take the large tool and a significant amount of pressure to compress the double valve springs. I actually place the head on the ground above a balled up shop rag and use the weight of my body and two hands on the tool to get the springs to compress. The tools work the same and a nice click indicates the keepers are set.
The Motion Pro Multi Valve Tools have been extremely durable and the grip resistant to the oils and chemicals they have been exposed to. They seem like they will last forever unless you loan them out, then they will likely disappear. Just have your buddy bring the head to you!
The cost will easily pay for itself the first time you use it in comparison to labor charges. And you can use it over and over again, making the once off-limit valve cleaning, inspection and replacement a very simple operation. Every true mechanic should have these tools.
