What it is
- IMS has a new footpeg for the adventure bike market.
- They are taking their successful dirt bike peg and growing it.
IMS has taken their many years of making MX and off-road footpegs and now offer them for the most current large adventure motorcycles. IMS uses cast certified 17-4, heat treated stainless steel. Made in the USA, they are powder coated and polished for a clean finish. IMS claims the increased width and length footpegs provide additional comfort and improved rider control. Additionally they have a patented tooth design that is said to offer improved traction to the rider’s boots and a mud relief pattern to reduce clogging. The pegs come with a lifetime warranty.
How it works
- The footpeg length really improves the rider's bike control.
- Check the web for helpful instillation tips. There are no instructions included.
Most large ADV motorcycles come up a little short in the footpeg department. Longer and wider footpegs allow for more control on 500-plus pound adventure motorcycles as well as much more comfort while standing. For instance on our KTM 990 test bike the standard foot pegs measure 48mm wide by 84mm long. The IMS ADV I footpegs measure 64mm wide by 134mm long. If this isn't big enough, IMS has an even bigger peg the Adventure II. The IMS footpegs arrive in a very nice box and are well packaged in foam. These are nice pieces and I like to see when manufactures invest in packaging to match their product.
There are no installation instructions, but in this case I will give IMS a pass because installing foot pegs should be pretty straightforward on most motorcycles. However if you have not changed KTM foot pegs before, these will fight you a little bit. I suggest you “google it” and you’ll see a nice video that details the process. ( https://youtu.be/TgEBRGSo7ZU ). KTM makes a special tool for holding the foot peg spring and I can see how this item would be handy. During the course of this test I went from having changed KTM foot pegs once in 7 years to having now done it a half dozen times, I now have it down pat. While not IMS’s problem and unique to this KTM 990 you will be amazed how many tools you will need to change the footpegs, on the right side you need to remove the brake pedal and on the left side you need to remove the lower chain buffer.
Once you are out riding you will immediately notice the improved comfort while standing and the increased control you will have over your adventure motorcycle in off road environments. If you ride your adventure motorcycle off-road often I highly recommend larger pegs. With the stock foot pegs, the wide shape of the KTM 990’s gas tanks was always “pushing’ your knees apart while standing making long sections of off road standing unpleasant. With the IMS footpegs this problem went away completely do to the additional length (length in this case is measured as the distance away from the motorcycle’s frame.) One of our test riders with a shorter inseam did not like the increased “length” of the pegs as this interfered with the space needed for for her legs to go straight down to the ground. Another common issue is the longer peg can drag on the ground in aggressive on-road cornering and bang on trail-close rocks at footpeg height. The biggest improvement of the footpegs overall is the additional leverage a rider will have on the motorcycle and the IMS product is clearly a winner here.
The width makes it way more comfortable when sitting and standing. It is a bigger target for foot placement and when standing there is more area to find a sweet spot. In gaining width all of the increase came on the back or rearward side of the footpeg so the footpeg to shift or brake pedal is unaffected. Rocking your feet forward and back becomes a little more difficult for riders who rest their foot in the arch atop the peg but is was really not an issue. And if you want en even larger platform, IMS has the Adventure II peg available, it is like a running board more than a peg!
The shape of the teeth are little more pyramid shaped than the stock peg and not as pointed. Most riders felt much difference between the actual grip but grip was not a real issue. The majority of the testing was done in dry conditions but we do not feel that there would be any disadvantage in muddy or wet either. The large open hole in the footpeg’s pattern leaves nothing for mud to pack onto.
Overall, these are very nice foot pegs, that fit well, are well made and come with a lifetime warranty, so how can you go wrong? They made the KTM 990 we tested them on much more fun to ride in the dirt as well as more comfortable overall. They are on the upper end on the price range but they will be the last set you’ll likely have to buy due to a very liberal warranty. And even at $225.00 the improvement you feel on the bike has a dollar to outcome ratio that is very high.
