What it is

  • Fly's newest line of roost guards.

The Revel Roost Guards from Fly Racing are their newest product in the protection category. They have two models available: the Revel Race and the Revel Offroad. The Revel Race is Fly’s less protective roost guard that does not offer the shoulder protection compared to the the Revel Offroad version. They both obtain TPR rubber and soft plastic rivets that prevent injury upon impact which helps protect your skin from abrasions and possible punctures. Also, the inner biofoam liner can be removed for added ventilation or for washing. They both come in two colors each: black and white.

How it works

  • Revel Race and Revel Offroad roost guards are some of the most comfortable chest protectors I have worn
  • Removable liner and neck plates are unique features to allow for customization.
  • Velcro straps allow for optimum fitting.

Both the Revel Race and Revel Offroad roost guards are some of the most comfortable chest protectors I have worn. They both have a pleasant fit to the body where it isn’t too loose and flopping around but they also aren’t too tight to where they restrict movement. Instead, it provides a snug fit that is complemented by the inside padding that provides comfort and doesn’t irritate or pinch your body. Additionally, the roost guards provide great protection front and back as well as a little on the sides, all while not being too bulky. This allows to be worn under or over the jersey and stay pretty cool because it is vented and allows air flow. The straps going around the side of the chest protector have a wide range of adjustability so it can fit riders of any shape and size. Also, the straps feature a buckle that is molded into the front piece which keeps it in place and out of danger of coming undone while riding.

The difference between the Race and Offroad models is the Race doesn’t have shoulder/arm protection while the Offroad does. The Revel Race boasts 2 Velcro straps going over the shoulders that can adjust the height of the front and back plates. The Revel Offroad features these same straps but instead attach to a plastic piece protecting the shoulder from a crash or debris. In addition, another plastic piece attached to the shoulder which comes down to protect the bicep. The height can also be adjusted by straps to customize the fit. Although I didn’t mind the shoulder cup for additional protection, I didn’t enjoy having the bicep piece as it was very noticeable and moved around while riding. However, they are removable so if you like the shoulder protection but not the arm pieces, just taking the strap off will remove this piece. Also, the airflow through the numerous vents on the front and back of the chest protector is another benefit. Plastic mesh cover the holes in the plastic to allow for airflow while still keeping debris from  hitting your body.

Some unique features include the ability to remove the inner foam liner or the upper front and back panels. When the inner foam liner is removed, the roost guard becomes ultra lightweight and opens up some of the vents even more to allow for better cooling and ventilation. Also, it provides an even slimmer fit which someone who doesn’t enjoy wearing a bulging chest protector might like. One downside the removable liner, it takes a bit of effort to put it back in place once taken off. The mesh vents with the rubber liner can be difficult to get back into place, especially the small ones. Also, if you wear a neck brace, the plastic pieces on the front and back of the chest protector are designed with neck brace owners in mind. You can either slide the neck brace under the plastic pieces of remove them. Removing them is quite simple and will let the neck brace sit closer to the body instead of atop of the plastic.

Whether you like wearing the chest protector over or under the jersey, both of these roost guards allow you to do both. They don’t appear to be too bulky when under the jersey and they don’t irritate the skin. When wearing the Offroad model under the jersey, the jersey can get caught on the shoulder/back plates when pulling the jersey over it to put it on.

Overall, both the Revel Race and Revel Offroad are exceptional roost guards that perform well in protecting the upper body while also having a sleek and comfortable design. They have all the necessities and allow for any modification one might like without having anything inessential. Whether you’re racing across the desert or flying over a triple, the Fly Revel Roost Guards will increase your safety every time you ride.
