What it is

  • Practical feature updates
  • Enhanced ventilation and weight reduction
  • Superior energy management
  • New shape and look.

Building on the success of its predecessor, the ATR-3 features cutting edge fifth generation Omni - directional suspension (ODS) system and a unique rebuildable design, This helmet is apart of a new standard in head protection. The ATR-3 was engineered to provide superior energy management capabilities, effectively mitigating impacts in a broader range of demanding conditions.

The ATR-3 focuses on enhancing weight reduction and ventilation with a range of innovative features. Its new 3K Carbon Composite Shell not only maintains the durability of the previous tri-composite design, but also delivers a striking carbon fiber finish. The helmet showcases significantly improved ventilation, boasting large intake vents and direct channels to enhance airflow around the rider's head. Moreover, with its revamped shell composition and streamlined ODS system, the ATR-3 achieves a remarkable weight reduction of 100 grams, aimed at providing a lower center of gravity and an enhanced rider feel.

In addition to its advanced ODS 5 system and improved weight and ventilation, the ATR-3 introduces several updates aimed at enhancing overall helmet performance. It incorporates an Eject-compatible design for seamless integration and features a magnetic chinstrap clasp to enhance durability. Furthermore, it includes practical elements such as a removable roost guard, mud visor extension, integrated speaker pockets, new custom designed titanium D-rings, and compatibility with drink tubes.

The ATR-3 upholds the safety standards set by its predecessor, the ATR-2, retaining crucial features such as the EPP Chinbar, clavicle cutaway, cervical spine relief, sternum pad, shear-away visor screws, and emergency removable cheek pads.

How it works

  • Improved comfort and fit
  • Excellent ventilation
  • User-friendly magnetic chin strap
  • Great crash replacement program

In our time with 6D’s ATR-3, we’ve been genuinely impressed. While earlier models were criticized for feeling and appearing bulky, those feelings don’t translate at all with this version. It feels much more compact, comfortable, and secure.

Ventilation is superb—one of the best we’ve felt among competing brands. There are exhaust vents on the back that help significantly, especially during hot weather like we experience riding in the summer months. Another feature noticed was the redesigned padding area. It now feels more open and less restrictive, which resolves a common complaint from past users. That said, we did notice slightly more wind noise compared to some other helmets, due to the more open design. On the flip side, this makes it easier to use intercom systems without extra adapters—something off-road riders will appreciate.

A big win in our books is the magnetic chin strap system. It’s quick, secure, and very user-friendly. The liner is fully removable and washable, which is a big plus for maintenance. 6D also includes a clear visor extension for those difficult mud/rain conditions.

We found the helmet true to size. I usually wear a Large, and while it felt snug around the cheeks at first (which some prefer for safety), it broke in nicely after a few rides - a common trait amongst proper fitting helmets.

The eyeport offers a generous field of vision, similar to many helmets worn in the past. It even feels slightly extended in the lower portion, which can help you see more of your surroundings or bike controls—especially useful in technical riding situations.

This brand has been a pioneer and leader in the way of safety, and the ATR-3 helmet is no exception. They also offer a great crash replacement program. If (or when) you take a hard impact, you can send your helmet in for inspection. If it’s repairable, they’ll handle it at minimal cost. If not, they offer a discount toward a new one, which is a big value add in our opinion. Helmets are generally a one-time (big impact) use product, and not taking the proper precautions can be quite dangerous. With 6D’s program, it relieves a little bit of the financial burden that comes with having to replace your helmet after a heavy impact and makes putting your head and safety as the top priority just a little more financially feasible.

This helmet is a strong contender in the premium market. With advanced safety features, excellent ventilation, and thoughtful design upgrades, it’s worth considering if you’re ready to invest a little more in your safety and comfort. While we haven’t truly “tested” it yet, we’ve had very good experiences with crashing in 6D helmets before and we expect no different with the ATR-3.
