DBT Yamaha YZ250FX 24 Hour Race Effort–Update #2

YZ250FX 24-Hour–It’s Getting Close

750-size
This is how the bike looked as a test mule. Pretty ugly and beat with 75 hours on the clock but it is prepped with fresh oil and tuned suspension.

Last week team DirtBikeTest spent some time testing the YZ250FX for the JBC Glen Helen 24 hour. We went to Milestone MX on Tuesday to test suspension and mapping and then Saturday night we went to the desert and tested more suspension and the Baja Designs headlight.  After trying a few different fuel injection maps I made my decision. I picked a map that pulls consistantly all the way through the throttle. The map is not too aggressive but it is stronger than the flat stock map. We did this by adding more fuel through the GYTR power tuner. This is a plus to the team because it is the perfect balance and will not wear us out too much for 24 hours but will make the bike more fun to ride.

We let the old guy (Jimmy Lewis) take it out for a spin to see what he though about the suspension setup. He’s too big (fat) but he said it was plush!

Revalved forks by TBT Racing.

Travis from TBT Racing was nice enough to sponsor us on suspension and go testing with the team. He re-valved the forks and shock, new seals and oil, and a 5.5 shock spring. The suspension is a little soft for a motocross track as it would bottom a little more than wanted but works great on high speed rough GP courses. Just what we want it to work on. The forks soaked up bumps and rocks like they were not even there feeling like you were gliding through the desert with confidence. The shock stuck to the loose desert terrain like glue, we never felt sloppy or scared of how the bike was handling. we are all very impressed with the suspension setup!

The BajaDesigns Squadron XL works flawlessly as we could see far out into the dark night as we just adjusted it into place for the best throw and spread. I could never out run the light even on wide open fire roads. We were new to Fasst Company’s Flexx bars but happy we chose them they are a great addition, although they are heavier than most bars our team riders feel that they soak up impacts when hitting sharp rocks slowing down the harsh jolt and works well in whoops helping with less arm and hand fatigue. We also bolted on the IMS Pro Series foot pegs. As a team we all agreed that they have lots of grip and fit our feet well so we do not have to try to hold on as much with our legs.

The Yamaha looks great after we applied the Megla Designs graphics.

As we finish putting the last touches on the YZ250FX this week it looks like it is going to be a great weekend of racing. I’ve put at least 10 hours of work and wrenching into this project from calling companies to contacting riders, so the race might end up being the easy part. We have a lot of companies helping us out and we are really thankful for this chance.
