bLU cRU Goes All New
2020 model releases are in full swing, and Yamaha’s announcement is sure to appeal to the majority. ALready boasting one of the larger motorcycle lineups out of the big four Japanese OEM’s, Yamaha announced a new production off-road two-stroke this morning – the YZ125X! We built a concept YZ125X last summer to turn the motocrosser into a capable off-road racer, but now Yamaha has done the dirty work for us.
Based off of the tried-and-true YZ125, the X model has some key features that sets it apart from its motocross cousin. First, the CDI Ignition settings and power valve timing has been altered along with a newly shaped power valve. Additionally, the bLU cRU revamped the cylinder head combustion chamber. All of these changes are aimed at making the potent 125cc two-stroke motor more off-road friendly for the wide variety of terrains common on the trails and race course.
Other standard off-road features to transition the bike include an O-Ring chain, 18in. rear wheel, kickstand, and a petcock with a reserve function. Similarly, Yamaha has stuck with their signature KYB SSS coil-sprung suspension components with different settings to accommodate off-road terrain. A larger 270mm front brake rotor increases stopping power and will be a welcomed addition.
We’ll be interested to see how the power delivery compares to the YZ125 MXer and if truly would be a better off-road bike, and in what conditions it would be better suited. We know some racers prefer the standard F models or the YZ250 over the YZ250X in most West Coast style off-road racing as most races feel like long motocross tracks. However, the tamer power delivery is usually preferred by those back East or the riders/racers who find themselves in tight singletrack and rocks more often than not.
The bike will be available in dealers June 2019 and retails for $6,699.
